The Kentucky Forest Conservation Act

The Kentucky Forest Conservation Act requires that by July 15, 2000 a Kentucky Master Logger is on-site and in charge of all commercial logging operations. Master Loggers are required to carry their Designation Card with them. If you are a logger that has not gone through the Kentucky Master Logger program you can register for an upcoming class. Click on the Brochure for more information.

KF Conservation Brochure
The Master Logger and Best Management Practices (BMPs) requirements of the Kentucky Forest Conservation Act went into effect July 15, 2000. The highlights include:
  • Kentucky Master Logger on-site and in charge of every commercial logging operation (excluding horse loggers). Anyone who has completed the program since its beginning in 1992 fulfills the Kentucky Master Logger program requirement.
  • Kentucky's Best Management Practices must be used on every commercial logging operation (including horse logging).
  • The Kentucky Division of Forestry will be the primary agency responsible for working with loggers to enforce the KML program and BMP requirements.
  • Kentucky Master Loggers must complete 6 hours of continuing education courses every 3 years. Anyone completing the KML course prior to July 15, 2000 will have until July 15, 2003 to obtain 6 hours of continuing education to keep their Master Logger status. Those graduating after July 15, 2000 will have up to 3 years from when they graduate to obtain 6 hours of courses. Those failing to fulfill the continuing education requirements will lose their master logger status.
WHAT IT DOES NOT INCLUDE: The legal requirements do not pertain to individuals who cut timber on their own NON-INDUSTRIAL land, timber harvesting incidental to CLEARING for farming or surface mining (if under permit), firewood cutting or christmas tree harvesting.

Approximately 10 Kentucky Master Logger Training Programs will be offered each year for the next several years. View this web site often to get more information on the location, availability, and registration for these programs.

For further information on legal requirements for loggers, go to the Forest Conservation Act section of Kentucky Division of Forestry's Web page.
