CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIRED FOR MASTER LOGGERS

The Kentucky Forest Conservation Act states that Kentucky Master Loggers must obtain six hours of Continuing Education (CE) every three years from the date their card was issued, in order to renew and/or maintain their Master Logger status. Continuing Education is important because it enables individuals to stay current on new innovations, laws and regulations, best management practices and other topics related to timber harvesting resulting in more efficient and environmentally sound logging operations. If your Master Logger Card expires and you have not achieved the six hours of continuing education, then your name will be removed from the active master logger list and you will be operating in violation of the Kentucky Forest Conservation Act. At this point you will have to re-attend the three day Master Logger Program in order to regain your Master Logger status.

HOW TO OBTAIN CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

Every 3 years you must obtain 6 continuing education credits or CECs. There are three ways you can earn CECs

• Pre-Approved Courses.
You can attend a pre-approved continuing education course. These courses vary from all day 6 hour courses where all of your CECs can be obtained in one course to 1 or 2 hour courses where more than one course must be attended. Approved classes will require each class participant to fill out a Kentucky Master Logger Sign-In sheet at the beginning of the program. Thee sheets will be sent to the KML office where your CECs will be recorded.

• Attendance of Other Logger or Forestry Programs.
The second way to obtain CECs is to attend courses that have not been pre-approved. These include out-of-state logger programs and forestry programs held within Kentucky. To obtain CECs for these program you can request a Continuing Education Unit Credit Form (FORM KML-1) to fill out and submit to obtain credits for the program. In order to qualify the program must fall within one of these topic areas: forest management, forest health, timber harvesting, advanced BMPs, timber harvesting and water quality laws and regulations, siliviculture, ecosystem management, logging safety.

• At Home Using the LogJam Newsletter.
You can obtain up to 2 CECs by taking a CEC test for specified articles in the Kentucky LogJam Newsletter. There will be several CEC articles per year in the LogJam. A test will be printed with each of these articles. Complete the test and send it to the KML office. If you correctly answer 80% of the questions you will receive 1 CEC per article. The LogJam page on this web site will contain the articles and the tests.

HOW TO RENEW YOUR KML CARD

After you have obtained 6 CECs you will have to send a Renewal Form and a $25 check to the the KML office. A reminder that includes the form is normally sent out twice a year. However, you can also go the RENEWAL page on this web site for the form and all the information on renewing your KML status.
